Upgrading your Microsoft Dynamics CRM to a newer version is a strategic project for your company. Not only downtime must be as short as possible, but the upgrade process should be done without loss of functionality. The key to success is that all customizations and all specific developments made in your Dynamics CRM should work identically in the new version.
There is a rule of thumb to know:
You can only upgrade your Dynamics CRM to the immediate following version. For instance, if you want to upgrade your Dynamics CRM 2011 version to the 2015 version, you must go through two successive upgrades:
- Dynamics CRM 2011 to Dynamics CRM 2013
- Dynamics CRM 2013 to Dynamics CRM 2015
Define your upgrade method:
There are 3 ways to update your installation of Dynamics CRM:
- In-place upgrade
- Side by Side Upgrade with existing SQL Server
- Side by Side Upgrade with a new SQL Server
Test and draft your upgrade project plan
Run the upgrade on the production server
This final step is upgrading the Dynamics CRM production server by applying the upgrade project plan defined during testing. It is during this step that the system will be unavailable. Patches made during the tests are then implemented. The upgraded system is finally thoroughly tested to confirm its proper operation.
Sofa Tiger : The Side by side upgrade is the preferred and also the most secure way to upgrade. You can always roll back to the old server in case of malfunction.
